Carolina Day School Celebrates Homecoming

Carolina Day School is relatively young in the world of independent schools. The School was established in 1987 by the merger of two of the best private schools in Asheville - Asheville Country Day School and St. Genevieve/Gibbons Hall. The rich history of these schools, and their traditions of excellence in education and pioneering spirit are still alive and well today.

Carolina Day School’s Homecoming Weekend has been growing more and more every year. Friday morning, 16 teams competed in Carolina Day’s Annual Golf Tournament at Reems Creek Country Club. Money raised benefits the athletic department. Special thanks to our hole sponsors, including Strauss & Associates, Athena Health, Marthaler Jewelers, Altavista Wealth Management, Daugherty’s American Kitchen & Drink, Colton Groome & Company, Graham Partners, and Allergy Partners.

That afternoon, hundreds of Wildcat families in addition to alumni, parents of alumni, and former faculty and staff attended Fall Family Night, the bonfire, and drum circle.

Upper School student leaders kicked-off their fundraising for the Habitat Home Build Project by selling pizza and Greek salad at Fall Family Night. Nearly $2,000 was raised toward their goal to sponsor the Habitat for Humanity house. “Our mission is to enhance the community and to directly help a family in need by collaborating with the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and local volunteers,” said CDS senior Mia Trupiano.

The Middle School girls volleyball, Middle School boys soccer, varsity volleyball and varsity soccer teams competed against rival Veritas Christian Academy. In a special recognition ceremony, senior student athletes who participated in fall sports presented roses to their loved ones.

On Saturday, three members of the CDS family were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame - Laura Stanley '02, Marshall Fall '89, and former faculty member Charlotte Neder. “Whether on the court, trail, course, field, or track, Hall of Fame members past and present have made their mark on Carolina Day School,” said Athletic Director Steve Henry. The Carolina Day School Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2005 and recognizes accomplishment and impact. "CDS offered me the opportunity to be the best person, best athlete, and the best student I could be. I use these principles today when raising my kids, working a business transaction, and coaching my players," said Marshall Fall, 2014 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee.

Students, faculty, parents, and administrators of the St. Genevieve predecessor schools of Carolina Day came together to celebrate a new virtual home for their memories - St. Genevieve Memories Website. “All of us have worked hard to locate information, to complete roster of classes, and seek out our former faculty to reminisce,” said Joseph Lalley Jr., teacher and headmaster from 1950 until 1984. More than two years of work by the website committee has gone into developing the interactive site where more than 2,000 pictures and 4,000 profiles have already been uploaded and where alumni can continue to build the history through uploading their own stories. “We wanted to create a site that recalls the extraordinary place where generations of faculty, students, and their families built mind, body, and spirit… a site that is everlasting and thoughtful, something we all can add to as we try to recreate the St. Genevieve archives and share our memories of the school,” said Tish Anderson, former faculty and website committee member.S

Trent Van Blaricom ACDS '73 and Peter Chakales ACDS '75 and their band Zydeco Ya Ya kept the party going at the Alumni Reunion Happy Hour. More than 50 alumni gathered to celebrate their shared history under a tent on campus. Thanks to Ryan Guthy ’04 for donating Wicked Weed beer for the event.

Carolina Day School embodies their highest standards of academic achievement, character development, and the belief in developing young people for lives of leadership of and service to their community.
