New Book Talk Series Launches Feb. 13 with Discussion of Children and Social Media

Middle School Principal Jeff Kalil to lead discussion at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe of Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age by Sherry Turkle.

Jeff KalilWhether induced by academics, technology, or some other factor, isolation and loneliness seem to be the root causes of anxiety & depression in students. "Social" media can be a wonderful tool, but there is no way it can meet the true social and emotional needs of human beings.

Jeff Kalil notes that “Human connection, built on strong personal relationships, is an imperative foundation for the most meaningful teaching and learning.” Kalil, a parent of four, is the Middle School Principal at Carolina Day School (CDS) and has worked with middle school children for more than 25 years.

Kalil will explore deeper the topic of children, social media, and relationships, in a discussion of the book, Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age. In her book, renowned media scholar Sherry Turkle investigates how a flight from conversation undermines our relationships, creativity, and productivity—and why reclaiming face-to-face conversation can help us regain lost ground.

The book talk takes place Tuesday, February 13, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe, 55 Haywood Street, Asheville, NC. For more information or to register, visit http://www.malaprops.com/event/reclaiming-conversation-power-talk-digital-age.

This event is the first in a series of book discussions in partnership with Carolina Day School and Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe about children, parenting, education, and related topics led by faculty and staff of CDS.
