On Friday, August 25, nationally acclaimed hiker, Jennifer Pharr Davis, gave an inspirational talk to CDS students in middle and lower school—including great visuals—about her legendary record-breaking hike on the Appalachian Trail. She achieved record speed, finishing the roughly 2,000-mile trail from Maine to Georgia in 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes. Jennifer is a long distance hiker, author, speaker, National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, and Ambassador for the American Hiking Society. Her visit to CDS kicked off a new school-wide initiative of outdoor exploration, which includes a Hiking Challenge with an official Wilderness Passport book.

After Pharr Davis' talk, students and parents were able to attend a book signing with the author, during which families were able to pick up their Wilderness Passport books and a 30 best local hikes handout.

As an NC Green School of Excellence, we seek to broaden what we do as a school to foster an appreciation and respect in our students for the wonders of our beautiful natural surroundings.
