Margaret Sinnott has been at CDS since 2012. Margaret attended Asheville Country Day school from Pre-K through eighth grade. She then graduated from the Masters School outside of New York City in 1979. Margaret received her Masters of Arts in teaching at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA, and taught Pre-K for seven years, second and fifth grade in the public school system for four years in Pittsburgh, and taught first grade in an environmental charter school for two years prior to joining the CDS community.

In what ways can you teach/engage children at CDS that you couldn't at other schools? At CDS, I can engage my students through the development of integrated lessons and units. Other schools tend to teach from the manual. Here I can supplement lessons according to my students’ individual learning styles and abilities.”
 
What do you like most about your job at CDS? The students are excited about learning and are vested in their education. This is supported by the interest and involvement in the parents’ attitudes towards education. The parents are vested in their child’s education, which supports the teachers in their pursuit of excellence. The support and community among the staff of teachers and administrators is extremely supportive. My co-workers and administration team is always willing to help.”
 
In your opinion, how does the CDS community inspire students to be courageous and curious, wonder about things that they don’t understand, try new things, and develop individual passions? “We teach our students that we learn from our mistakes. We offer support for understanding to the individual. The student feels safe to ask for support when they don’t understand. Our curriculum, because it is intentionally engaging, creates an environment of curiosity. We let the students become thinkers solving real world problems.”
 
How would you describe your classroom? My classroom is a place where students feel safe to try new things. They feel their voice is heard and their opinions and contributions matter. They are respected for their individuality, yet are able to work as a team.”
 
What books and authors inspire you? “What inspires me is not a particular author, but a philosophy where curriculums are integrated to provide engaging authentic learning. Where students are respected for their individuality and supported to reach their full potential. I am inspired by the administration’s support for the teaching staff, and their continual offerings of professional development.”
 
What is your favorite quote about education, mentorship, children, and/or learning?

How would you describe yourself and/or your approach to your job in 10 words or less? I measure my success by the progress of my students. If they understand what I have taught them and can apply what I have taught them to different situations then I have been successful.”
 
Which classroom projects/events are you known for? “In math, I often make up problems to bring real world problems to the class. This helps students understand why they are learning a particular method for problem solving.”
 
What personal passion brings balance to your life? To bring balance to my life my passions are hiking and snow skiing. To get out into the mountains here and in Colorado bring a sense of calm to my world. I am passionate about the mountains and feel most at home on a trail or skiing down the snow capped mountains.”
 
Is there anything else we should know about you and your work? The smiles I get from my students are the reason I keep coming back year after year to teaching. How many people get to spend the day with such wonderful teammates in learning as a class full of eight year olds. Their curiosity inspires me to continue to strive to be the best teacher I can be.”
 
How is CDS different from what you experienced as a child in school? “I was fortunate in that I attended CDS and then went on to another school that valued individual thinkers.”
