Student Artwork to Benefit Habitat Project
Posted 11/03/2014 09:54AM

Middle and Upper School art students created paintings now on display at Zoe's Kitchen in Biltmore Village. The paintings may be purchased for $20, with all proceeds funding the Habitat for Humanity Student Build:"3 Schools, 1 House-Everyone wins."

"Our senior class is partnering with students from Christ School and Asheville Christian Academy to support both financially and physically the building of an affordable home for a family in Asheville," said Mia Trupiano '15. "Our mission is to enhance the community and to directly help a family in need by collaborating with the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and local volunteers."

Zoe's Kitchen also hosted a "percent night" for Carolina Day School in November with 15% of all purchases going to the Habitat project.

The following is a letter from an Upper School student regarding the Habitat Build project:

Hello Carolina Day School Families,

My name is Olivia Van Praag and I am a member of the senior class. I have attended Carolina Day since I was a Pre-K student so it has been a long ride. One thing I’ve always admired about our community here is our ability to work to a common goal and achieve it. Going through every grade at CDS I have participated in many different events and have loved all of them.

I am writing today to introduce you to a concept that I am very invested in. Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a fantastic program that aims to instruct the young and old about affordable housing as well as provide a sound home for a family who may not be as fortunate as we are. Habitat for Humanity Asheville has been very successful since its founding and continues to provide families with community, housing, and educational aspects of finance. The team of dedicated individuals working at the Habitat office have worked hard to complete an entire community in Swannanoa and have worked hard to start a community located in West Asheville.

Two years ago Asheville Christian Academy and Christ School participated in a student build together. They each raised half of the money to fund a house for a family. Carolina Day School was invited to join them this year in the project and we are thrilled. Our slogan is, “Three rivals, one house, everyone wins” and this couldn’t be more true. In order to complete this task we are asked to raise roughly $18,000 by September of 2015. ($9,000 by March). This task may seem very large, however myself along with other members of the community are sure we are able to work to this goal and help out a family in need!

At Fall Family Night, the pizza and salad stand was also a habitat stand. If you bought pizza and salad from us you helped us raise money to work towards the $18,000. Throughout the year we will be hosting different events and functions to help raise the money needed to be a part of the build. Myself, along with other members of the CDS Habitat Advisory board urge you to bring the whole family, friends, whoever! To help us raise the money needed to provide a family with affordable housing.

So far we have raised $2,000 so we still have a long ways to go! Donations are always welcome, but most of all I want to express the amount of joy our community will receive as a whole through accomplishing this student build.

I hope everyone is having a good start to the school year!

Sincerely,
Olivia Van Praag
