A top-16 finish highlighted a successful start to the Carolina Day School (CDS) Speech & Debate team season at The Laird Lewis Invitational Tournament, held at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC. The tournament attracted more than 300 competitors from three states. Representing CDS were Samantha Davis ’18, Zoë Eshan ’18, Ben Ceane ’20, Harrison Diamond ’20, Kiril Kostov ’20, Anderson Lawler ’20, Zacharia Malas ’20, LB Shillinglaw ’20, and Isaak Davis ’21. Upper School teacher and coach Mark Wonnacott accompanied the team.
Team co-captain Samantha cleared preliminary rounds and won one of three ballots against a former state champion in elimination rounds before finishing as an octafinalist. The tournament was Samantha’s first since returning from overseas, and she returned to form quickly. “It was rewarding to see the hard work in research and practice pay off,” said Samantha.
Competing in junior varsity in their first tournament ever, Anderson, Zacharia, and Isaak all managed preliminary round wins. Despite the fact that they were facing off against more seasoned competitors, each found clever ways to outfox their opponents. Zacharia bested a second-year competitor by drawing a distinction between democratic societies and the Jim Crow south.
In programmed oral interpretation, co-captain Zoë took a piece she had written and composed in one week. Her performance netted her two second-place finishes. Zoë has now competed in seven NSDA events, demonstrating tremendous flexibility and ingenuity. “Every event I try, I find something to like about it,” said Zoë.
Ben, Harrison, Kiril, and LB represented the school in public forum debate. Working collaboratively, the four managed to construct a winning argument about the circumvention of missile defense systems in South Korea. “The topic is constantly changing, so we really have to bulk up our research,” said Ben after the tournament.
The team will next compete at the Riverside High School tournament in Greenville, SC on September 23, 2017. For questions about the team, please contact Mark Wonnacott at firstname.lastname@example.org.
