Top-12 Finish for CDS Debaters

The CDS Speech and Debate team posted another impressive result at the Riverside High School Carolina Kickoff tournament in Greenville, SC this weekend. The tournament, which drew more than 300 competitors from four states, marks the beginning of regional competition for speech and debate. If the beginning is any indication, this should be a strong season for CDS.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Amanda Antal ‘19 narrowly missed podium recognition. Her record, which included a narrow loss to the eventual tournament champion, was enough for a 12th place finish in the field. “Amanda learned a lot from her last performance, and she keeps getting better,” said coach Mark Wonnacott. Genevieve Beatty ‘20, competing in the varsity division in her first tournament, lost tough rounds against competitors with a combined record of 12-4, the second highest strength of schedule at the tournament. “I lost some close decisions, but I really learned a lot about how debate works,” she said.

Zoë Eshan ‘18 again presented her interpretation of The Yellow Wallpaper. Her unconventional performance posed a serious challenge to critics, and her wide range of scores reflected that. “I think the piece has important things to say about women and mental health. It’s frustrating that judges don’t always want to listen, but I’m glad to get the message out there,” said Zoë about her performance.

The team currently boasts three competitors in the regional top-10 based on season-long performance. CDS will next compete at North Mecklenberg Highschool on October 8. For questions about the team, please contact Mark Wonnacott.
