Get to know Lisabeth Harrison:

In what ways can you teach/engage children at CDS that you couldn't at other schools? Carolina Day provides an ideal class size and the necessary resources to maximize interaction and enrichment with each student. In First Grade we have a 5-1 student to teacher ratio that allows us to provide each student with daily one-on-one instruction.”

What do you like most about your job at CDS? Our student body and the Carolina Day families are the lifeblood of our school.  In First Grade, 'our little friends' are well prepared and begin each day with a sense of adventure and wonder that never ceases to amaze me. I am also very thankful for my kind and hardworking colleagues that make each day fun and exciting.”

In your opinion, how does the CDS community inspire students to be courageous and curious, wonder about things that they don’t understand, try new things, and develop individual passions? “Our curriculum provides our students the opportunity to expand their thoughts and actions in nontraditional ways. The creative spirits of our little friends are the starting point for many of our enrichment activities. We are consistently pairing the academic curriculum with art-related projects and outside of classroom real world learning experiences.”

How would you describe your classroom? “First Grade is a place students where students feel confident and know they can contribute an unending level of thoughts and ideas.”

What books and authors inspire you? “As a mother of three children I’ve always enjoyed Children’s literature. The Giving Tree, Where the Wild Things Are and Goodnight Moon remain family favorites. We have multiple reading and story activities each day. The Jack and Annie books are currently very popular with the Lunch Bunch crowd.”

What is your favorite quote about education, mentorship, children, and/or learning? "Tell me and I forget; show me and I remember; involve me and I understand." ~Anonymous

How would you describe yourself and/or your approach to your job in 10 words or less? “Constantly amazed and impressed by the creative talents of our students.”

Which classroom projects/events are you known for? “The study of the Monarch Migration is the cornerstone and personal highlight of our First Grade curriculum. We follow the migration from its earliest stages and our study culminates with all of our little friends turning themselves into Monarch Butterflies and migrating throughout the halls and different divisions of the CDS campus.”

What personal passion brings balance to your life? “Spending time with my family is top priority outside of Carolina Day. With three adult sons, I frequently find myself jumping from city to city and enjoy every minute of it!”

Is there anything else we should know about you and your work? Being a part of the Carolina Day community for 15 years has been a blessing for me and my family. It’s been a privilege to be a part of the school’s transformation into a leading preparatory institution. I am excited for the years to come.”

How is CDS different from what you experienced as a child in school? “As a child, I grew up attending Catholic school in the northeast. We spent a lot of time learning from our desk and we had limited access to the tools and resources that are available at Carolina Day. The core subjects and curriculum remain, but we’ve been able to make learning a fun and engaging experience. We approach learning from multiple directions in First Grade that allows for students to engage with the subject matter from different directions and perspectives. This increases participation and engagement.”
